Since its launch in early access in January 2025Assetto Corsa EVO continues to evolve before the community's eyes, with a series of significant updates, revisions to its development roadmap, and decisions that profoundly influence the gameplay experience. The title of Kunos Simulations establishes itself as one of the most ambitious driving simulators in Early Access, but not without controversy or major course revisions.
A roadmap in motion
Initially, EVO's development roadmap was structured around clear objectives: to progressively enrich the content with new cars, circuits and features, while aiming for a major final version originally expected for autumn 2025. This complete version was to include in particular a structured career mode, a detailed progression system, a "free roam" mode and of course significant technical improvements on AI, physics and VR support.
Over the months, several of these objectives have been revisited or postponedThe development team preferred to take more time to refine the mechanics rather than sticking to a rigid date. Free roam mode, for example, has been postponed to later updates and is no longer tied to a strict timeframe.
Career mode: a reimagined vision
One of the most discussed changes concerns career modeInitially conceived as a progression system based on experience, an internal economy with car upgrades and gains, and an event-driven structure, the developers have decided to... Given the current state of development and community feedback, the developers have decided to... remove this traditional modelabandoning the integrated experience point, virtual currency and progression economy systems.
Instead, the team is focusing on the Driving Academyredesigned as the heart of the single-player experience. Rather than a series of races with economic rewards, it is now a true learning and skill development tool for players, designed to help them master the cars, tracks, and driving techniques. This decision is driven by the desire to offer an experience more consistent with "what sim racing fans are looking for."
Content already delivered and technical improvements
Since its Early Access debut, Assetto Corsa EVO has already reached several notable milestones. The first updates brought additional cars and several highly anticipated tracks, thus expanding the offering for players. Releases like 0.2 have enriched the content with seven new cars and two tracks, while also introducing gameplay and performance improvements.
The update 0.4, launched more recently, is considered one of the richest in content so far, with numerous improvements, optimizations and new features that enhance the overall gaming experience.
From a technical standpoint, aspects such as the Vehicle physics, tire model, opponent AI, and VR support These are areas for ongoing development, often mentioned by the community as priorities for improvement in the coming months.
Multiplayer and other ambitions
One of the major milestones planned in the roadmap is the introduction of a stable and competitive multiplayer mode. This mode, announced for release in a future major update, is expected to be a central pillar of the EVO experience, allowing players to participate in online races with a global player base. Standalone server features and tools to facilitate network racing are also planned, although further details are still to come.
Community, feedback and challenges
The community plays a vital role in the game's evolution, with active discussions surrounding VR performance, braking feel, grip management, and even the possibility of advanced modding support. These discussions demonstrate how EVO is perceived as a living, evolving project, where player feedback is closely monitored by the developers.
However, despite its highly ambitious aspects and enormous potential, the game's recent reception on Steam shows a division within the community, with criticisms regarding the current state of the content and the communication surrounding certain design decisions.
Assetto Corsa EVO continues its progress through Early Access with a dynamic, and unfortunately sometimes revised, roadmap, prioritizing quality and the final experience over a strict schedule. Major features like career mode have been redesigned to better meet sim-racing expectations, while other elements such as multiplayer, free roam, and technical advancements remain priority areas for future updates.
