A few days after a first video focused on the universe and the open world, crimson desert further details are revealed in a second official presentation dedicated to combat mechanics and character progression. Titled "Preview #2: Combat and Progression"This new video provides a better understanding of the gameplay philosophy of the upcoming game. Pearl Abyss, still expected on March 19th.
This second presentation emphasizes a key point: in Crimson Desert, combat is primarily shaped by the player's choices. Beyond the equipment and skills unlocked throughout the adventure, each encounter can be approached in multiple ways. The player is encouraged to adapt to the situation, whether by exploiting the environment, using different mounts, or modifying their tactical approach depending on the type of enemy encountered.
The video showcases a particularly diverse arsenal. Players will be able to wield everything from swords and shields to spears, two-handed swords, and axes, not to mention several ranged weapons. Each weapon type offers distinct feel and tactical possibilities, reinforcing the freedom of approach promised by the game. These weapons can be purchased, discovered during exploration, obtained as rewards after major battles, or even crafted directly by the player.
The combat system is designed to be fluid and spectacular, relying on chaining together combos that blend unarmed attacks, kicks, throws, and weapon techniques. Fights also gain depth thanks to the ability to apply elemental effects to weapons, such as fire or ice, adding an extra layer of strategy and making each battle more dynamic.
Mastering timing is crucial in combat. By carefully observing enemy movements and attack patterns, players can execute perfectly synchronized guards and dodges, paving the way for counter-attacks capable of turning the tide of a seemingly hopeless situation. This approach clearly rewards observation, precision, and calculated risk-taking.
In terms of progression, Crimson Desert introduces Abyss Fragments as a key resource. These fragments unlock and upgrade character skills and can be obtained by defeating powerful bosses or exploring the regions of Pywel. Some abilities can also be learned more organically through exploration or completing specific quests, reinforcing the sense of freedom in character development.
Equipment also benefits from a sophisticated progression system. Weapons and armor can be upgraded using materials obtained through mining, boss battles, quests, or exploration. Players will be able to refine their playstyle by combining different bonuses and special effects on their equipment. Certain major battles will even allow players to obtain exclusive equipment and costumes, sometimes linked to iconic skills directly tied to the defeated bosses.
With this second video, Pearl Abyss confirms that Crimson Desert will be more than just a spectacular open world. The studio seems to be aiming for a deep, challenging, and highly customizable combat system, capable of adapting to each player's preferences while rewarding mastery and experimentation.
Crimson Desert will be released worldwide on March 19 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games Store and Apple Mac, with pre-orders already available on all platforms.
