End of updates for the Oculus Quest 1 headset: What consequences for users?

Meta has announced that it will no longer support the original Quest 1 virtual reality headset with new software updates. Users of older hardware will soon see some social features being removed.

According to screenshots shared on Reddit and Twitter, the company sent an email stating that it will stop rolling out new features to the Quest 1 and that some features will disappear. However, the headset will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security patches through 2024. Users will no longer be able to "create or join a party" and those who currently have access to Meta Horizon Home's social features will lose that access. on March 5, 2023.

The Quest, which launched under the Oculus brand in 2019, is a predecessor to the popular Quest 2 headset, released in late 2020. Both headsets received the same new features despite having vastly different hardware. Meta may have trouble developing new features compatible with older hardware, or it may not want to spend more money on outdated hardware as it cuts its budget and lays off employees. It is also possible that Qualcomm will stop developing updates for this hardware.
