Preview Car Mechanic Simulator VR: interface issues but crazy immersion

PlayWay, publisher of the majority of "Mechanic Simulator", offers the flagship title of Red dot games, supported for the occasion by the studio GameFormatic SA, for this VR version by Car Mechanic Simulator. This is the 2018 version and not the recent 2021.

The game lends itself perfectly to the Virtual Reality experience. Physics sets the tone, we can pick up and interact with all the tools lying around in the workshop. At the first launch, the tutorial phase is very complicated to understand and poorly scripted. It took me over an hour to get over it. Ditto in game, the mount / unmount menu works randomly / inconsistently for the moment. We hope that a Day One patch will be released for the final version on June 8, because, as it stands, it could put off more than one player.

These ergonomics concerns are confirmed by other youtubers who have already published a few let's play on the platform. Apart from these few youthful worries which will, for sure, be quickly rectified, the possibilities and the immersion offered by this VR version are enormous: Repair, paint, adjust and drive cars in a world entirely in 3D.

The game includes 42 cars, over 10 tools, and over 1000 unique parts and options. Car Mechanic Simulator VR also includes car auctions where old cars are available for resale or can be purchased for your collection. The endless number of randomly generated missions in the game will keep you more than busy (and dirty). Major VR headsets are supported and no issues during launch affected my experience on Oculus Quest 2.

Supported VR headsets:

  • HTC Cosmos
  • HTC Cosmos Elite
  • HTC Vive
  • HTC Vive Pro
  • Microsoft Mixed Reality (various VR headsets, not AR)
  • Oculus Quest (in Oculus Link)
  • Oculus Quest 2 (in Oculus Link)
  • Oculus Rift
  • Oculus Rift S
  • Steam VR (various VR headsets)
  • Valve Index
