Valve is taking a major step by expanding SteamOS to other platforms, giving gamers an alternative to Windows for portable gaming devices. Lenovo is leading the way with the Legion Go S, unveiled at CES 2025.
Lenovo Legion Go S: first portable console with SteamOS
Powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 processor and an RDNA 3 GPU, the Legion Go S is optimized for mobile gaming. Its 8-inch QHD+ display and adjustable TDP promise a balance between performance and battery life. With SteamOS, it benefits from native access to Steam Cloud, Proton, and Big Picture, for a seamless experience.
New features and tools
Valve has announced an installation tool for SteamOS, allowing manufacturers to easily integrate the system into their devices. Regular updates will ensure optimal performance and increased game compatibility via Proton.
Towards a more open ecosystem
By working with Lenovo, MSI (for the "Claw" console), and other partners, Valve aims to standardize SteamOS as a viable alternative to Windows. Opening it up to more manufacturers promises a rich and diverse ecosystem for gamers.
