Twitch, NVIDIA, and AV1: Revolution in Streaming with New Enhanced Broadcasting Technology

A revolution in live streaming is looming with the imminent release of the Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting beta, a collaboration between Twitch, OBS, and NVIDIA, powered by powerful GeForce RTX graphics cards. This innovation will allow streamers to stream multiple encodings simultaneously, providing optimal viewing experiences for all viewers. In a world where streamers often have to choose between high resolution and reliable streaming, this new feature promises to provide balance by allowing streaming of multiple resolutions up to 1080p.

Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting: A Response to Current Challenges

Today, many streamers face a dilemma between high resolution and reliable streaming. High-quality videos provide a more enjoyable viewing experience, but they cause buffering for viewers with low bandwidth or older devices. Twitch, as an interactive live streaming platform, offers server-side transcoding for successful channels (partners), creating different versions of the same stream for different bandwidth levels, improving the viewing experience. However, many channels only offer one streaming option.

Twitch, OBS, and NVIDIA have joined forces to address this situation with the new Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting feature, available in beta this month. Thanks to the high-quality dedicated encoder (NVENC) of modern GeForce RTX and GTX graphics cards, streamers will be able to stream up to three resolutions simultaneously, reaching up to 1080p.

Ease of Use and Future Prospects

To simplify setup, Enhanced Broadcasting will automatically configure all OBS encoder settings, including resolution, bitrate, and encoding settings. A server-side algorithm will determine the best possible configuration for OBS Studio based on the streamer's configuration, eliminating the headache of adjusting settings to deliver the best experiences for viewers.

Enhanced Broadcasting beta testers will be able to experience higher bitrates, resolutions up to 4K, up to 5 simultaneous streams, as well as new codecs. These codecs include the latest generation AV1 for GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards, offering 40% higher encoding efficiency than H.264, and HEVC for previous generation GeForce graphics cards.

To participate in the Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting beta, visit twitch.tv/broadcast and register today. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, starting this month. Once registered for the beta, creators will receive an email with additional instructions.
