A whaling simulation game is in the works, which is directly inspired by the classic Moby Dick novel by Herman Melville.
Classic books and novels are absolutely perfect for video game adaptations. Games like BioShock, The Witcher series or the Metro games are proof that games can address the complex stories that books have to offer. Now it looks like a studio is making a whaling simulator that's not much different from Herman Melville's masterpiece Moby Dick.
The reverse is also true. Indeed, many video games have given birth to excellent films. We can undoubtedly quote Warcraft: The Beginning, Angry Birds, Kingsglaive - Final Fantasy XV or Assassin's Creed. Other films were inspired by true stories around the game, we can easily highlight The Queen's Gambit, the recent hit series released on Netflix around the game of chess, but also The Great Game which tells the story of Molly Bloom, a young woman known for having organized many illegal poker games, including the Hollywood jet set. According to Betiton ™, a legal site specializing in online casino games, poker enthusiasts should enjoy this movie, if they haven't already seen it.
Essex: The Whale Hunter is being developed by Polish studio 3T Games and will challenge players to assemble a crew of steel sailors in order to find and capture sperm whales. The developer confirms that Melville's 1800th century novel is the main inspiration for the game, saying its simulation will give fans a real feel for what whaling could have been like in the XNUMXs.
In addition to whaling, the game will require players to manage the staff, keep the ship in pristine condition, and manage the money in order to generate as much profit as possible. In this regard, it looks like a mix between a simulation game and a strategy similar to Age of Empires. The trailer available below gives a brief idea of what the game will look like. It shows a dramatic scene in which a ship is rocked by the merciless waves as a whale swims threateningly nearby. It's a little hard to watch right now, but the studio has plenty of time to work on it before the game is released.
As of yet, no date has been set for Essex: The Whale Hunter, but 3T Games says fans should expect it to air on Steam in 2023, which means gamers will have to wait quite a long time before its full release. In the meantime, Resident Evil 4's giant salamander sequence is probably the one that comes closest to harpooning a whale.
Speaking of which, Resident Evil 4 remains one of the most popular games in the Resident Evil franchise, although it stands out from its predecessors in several respects, especially in terms of gameplay and story. While main character Leon S. Kennedy was a returning protagonist from a previous episode of the series, the events of RE4 mostly emerged independently of the central story of the evil Umbrella company. Another big deviation, from Capcom's formula until then, was the inclusion of a new parasite responsible for monstrous mutations in Resident Evil 4, the Las Plagas (parasites developed by Osmund Saddler from pre-existing samples that 'he had obtained from his predecessors, in order to infect humans and create monsters like the horrid Novistadors).
