It's time to explore the different technologies that help to optimize the performance of Farming Simulator 22. Since the game's release, several updates have brought new technologies, such as FSR 2 and Intel's XeSS, which are compatible with most gaming graphics cards on the market, in addition to the DLSS and FSR 1 already implemented.
These technologies allow the game to internally render at a lower resolution than the final display, then apply intelligent upscaling to improve quality. For example, the DLSS in performance mode renders internally in Full HD (1920×1080) on a 4K TV, before upscaling via an algorithm that relies on artificial intelligence, to reach the final resolution.
Le patch 1.9 of FS22 has also introduced a new optimization, the SSR (Screenspace Shading Rate), which allows to define areas of lower rendering precision, such as unlit areas or areas of the same color. This can cause severe aliasing and variable image quality.
How to access DLSS, FSR, XeSS and SSR on Farming Simulator 22
On PC only, just go, FROM THE HOME PAGE (changing video settings cannot be done once in game), in the menu Options, then on the second tab, that of the display, symbolized by a monitor (1). Finally, click on the option “ Advanced graphics settings » at the bottom of the screen (2).
The new window that will be displayed will offer you the various optimizations (framed in red on the screenshot below).
If you have an nVidia RTX card (from the 2000 series), you can opt for DLSS. Being a proprietary technology, you won't be able to use it on an AMD or Intel card. For the latter, you will have to turn to the FSR (Fidelity FX 1 or 2) or the XeSS.
In terms of performance, whether you have an nVidia card or not, the FSR1 (Super Resolution FidelityFX 1), in “Performance” mode, offers the best FPS boost. However, there may be a slight loss of quality on very small details. You can judge on the video below:
For owners of old graphics cards (GTX 900 series type), you can use the new SSR (Screespace Shading Rate) option, called "Screen space shade ratio" on the French version of the game). This gives you a slight performance boost, but at the expense of graphics quality. I advise you to review the basic settings (like going from a "quality" preset to a "medium" preset) rather than using the SSR. It is particularly destructive on the details and brings a very pronounced aliasing. To be used only as a last resort.
What performance gain can I expect?
More than a long speech, I refer you to the video above, and to the summary graph below. Testing was performed on an Intel Core i7 based gaming configuration, nVidia RTX 2070 Super, 32GB RAM, all in "Very High" graphics mode with additional settings (such as "clip distance “) pushed to the maximum, in a 2,4K resolution.
For this example, FSR 1 gives the best performance, but the DLSS that offers the best quality. It is this last algorithm which gives the best quality/performance ratio.
