Experience the power of two diesel-hydraulic motors under sunny West Somerset skies in Train Sim World. The BR Class 52 DLC has just been released.
Built for the best express services, the BR Class 52 has crisscrossed the western region of BR and is now enjoying its retreat to conservation sites.
In 1955 the British Railways modernization plan was published. The plan called for all regions to phase out steam locomotives in favor of modern diesel locomotives. Most of the network switched to diesel-electric technology, but the western region took a different approach and began to consider the use of hydraulic transmission.
A few models will be produced in the following years for different tasks, but none will be as striking as the “Western” which was the first to roll off the production line in the early 1960s. Derived from German hydraulic diesel technology, the "Western" was equipped with two engines which, combined, made it possible to obtain a tractive effort much higher than on the preceding ones.
The Class 52 was capable of reaching 145 km / h, and would have reached a speed of 177 km / h according to unofficial records. Nonetheless, it set the standard for GWR express operations in the 60s and 70s, proving that diesel-hydraulic traction could be used efficiently. However, its reign ended in 1977, when it was replaced by the new BR Class 50 as well as the high speed trains of British Rail, the flagship of the company.
Out of a total production of 74 locomotives, only 7 would be kept under various conditions. Some are still operational and have made the West Somerset Railway their home.
