WhatTheDub is a game of its own. It is played exclusively in multiplayer, and locally (or via screen sharing on Discord, Zoom, etc.). Its principle is simple and promises hours of laughter ... provided you are English-speaking because the game does not speak the language of Molière.
WhatTheDub launches on PC / Mac, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 4. The game displays video sequences during which a gap of a few seconds in the subtitles and the dialogues will have to be filled by the players. There follows a vote between players (6 + 6 people from the public) to find out who will have rewritten the best dialogues. You will understand, the idea here is not to be serious, but rather to entertain the gallery with twisted and wacky dialogues, which will complete the library of 300 video clips of the game.
In practice, how does a game work?
- The players start a new game.
- The host shares a code that is displayed on the screen so that your friends can join a room via an internet browser (ideally on a smartphone)
- Players watch a horrific clip with a missing line of dialogue.
- Players enter (in text) their replacement voices through the browser.
- Their dubbing are played, via text-to-speech, on the original clip.
- Players vote on the best voices through their browser.
- Based on the votes, a winner is selected and the next round begins.
We were able to try in small numbers, but the basic idea is attractive and promises a few hours of furry. Only downside, it is imperative to understand English and at least know how to write it since the extracts are, for the moment, only available in this language.
