Apple is launching its groundbreaking SOS emergency security service via satellite in France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This advanced technology is built into all iPhone 14 models and allows users to send a message to emergency services when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi network coverage. Additionally, users can use the app Locate to share their satellite location with loved ones when they are in an area without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
All iPhone 14 models feature specially designed Apple components and built-in software that work together to establish a direct connection to satellites. Satellite Emergency SOS builds on key iPhone features such as Emergency Call, Medical ID, emergency contacts and location sharing in Find My, providing the ability to connect to a satellite to share critical information with emergency services and loved ones. This unique service connects users to relay centers staffed by Apple-trained emergency specialists who will notify emergency call centers or other support services to provide assistance.
The satellite emergency SOS service is easy to use. On the iPhone 14, simply holding down the side button and one of the two volume buttons or quickly pressing the side button five times calls for emergency services, even if the user is not unable to dial 112. When a user enables this feature, iPhone sends an emergency message to a list of emergency contacts and to local emergency services, as well as to Apple. If the user is unable to speak, iPhone automatically sends their location to emergency services.
The Satellite Emergency SOS Service is a valuable addition to the iPhone 14 lineup and could help save lives by allowing users to contact emergency services in the event of a crisis, even when they are not in able to connect to the cellular or Wi-Fi network. This can be particularly useful in rural or isolated areas where network coverage may be limited, or in emergency situations such as natural disasters or situations of imminent danger. With Satellite Emergency SOS, users can rest assured that emergency services will be alerted and able to provide the assistance needed, even in the most difficult of situations.
