A few months ago, Microsoft made a controversial decision to ban the installation of emulators on its Xbox consoles, thus depriving gamers of the possibility of enjoying their favorite retro games. However, developers have found a trick to circumvent this ban, allowing gamers to once again install emulators on their Xbox console, but it comes with a small price.
According to Phonandroid, last April, the gaming community was shocked when Microsoft blocked the installation of popular emulators on its Xbox consoles, leaving the owners of a collection of retro games disappointed, because they had chosen this console precisely for this possibility. An astonishing decision, because even the boss of Xbox himself had argued in favor of legal emulation.
Although it is still possible to use the developer mode of Xbox to install emulators, it requires complex manipulations and the purchase of a license costing 19 dollars. Fortunately, a team of developers recently came up with a system to revert the installation of emulators on Xbox consoles to "commerce" mode (the default mode). This new method offers the advantage of not having to juggle between different modes and allows you to manage your entire library of retro games on a single interface, which is more convenient for players.
A pack of emulators for Xbox
According to the article by Phonandroid, the developers now offer a pack containing several emulators such as Dolphin Emu (for GameCube and Wii), XBSX2.0 (PlayStation 2), Xenia (Xbox 360) and RetroArch (for retro consoles such as Super Nintendo or Megadrive, among others). To access this pack, players can go to the official store page “ UWeaPons“, an authorized platform for the distribution of Windows applications on Xbox.
However, to download this pack, the players will have to make a small financial effort, since it is necessary to subscribe to a monthly subscription of 2 dollars on the Patreon of the developers. By being registered, they will have access to download the emulator pack.
Bypass Microsoft controls
Phonandroid clarifies that the developer team has ensured that their emulators are not detected by Microsoft programs responsible for automatically blocking the distribution of emulators on the Xbox Store. Even if detected, emulators will be quickly made available again “in a few hours… without too many problems”. Access to the pack for Patreon subscribers is automated and SirMangler hopes the emulators can survive for at least 2 weeks, if not longer, although he cautions that they could be removed at any time.
