American agricultural machinery manufacturer Allis-Chalmers began manufacturing operations in the 1840s and quickly grew in size after merging with two other companies, becoming a leading company in its hometown of Milwaukee. The company's presence in Milwaukee was so significant that its factories became landmarks, with the "West" factory even giving its name to West Allis, Wisconsin. In 1914, Allis-Chalmers diversified into agricultural equipment and played a role in projects such as uranium separation and building electric motors for submarines during the World Wars.
Allis-Chalmers has introduced various product lines, including agricultural tractors, industrial tractors, combine harvesters, turbines, processing equipment and garden tractors. Acquisitions followed in 1928, including the Monarch Tractor Company, Advance-Rumely in 1931, and Buda Engine Co. in 1953. In 1952, Allis-Chalmers acquired LaPlant Manufactures and formed a joint venture, Fiat-Allis, with Fiat Tractor Company in 1974.
Facing economic challenges in the 1980s, the company sold its agricultural division to the German company KHD (Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz) AG in 1985, becoming Deutz-Allis. However, due to significant losses, Deutz-Allis was dissolved shortly thereafter, resulting in the creation of the successful and still-running Allis-Gleaner Corporation (AGCO). The Allis-Chalmers brand name was not reintroduced; AGCO, following numerous acquisitions, now markets tractor brands such as Fendt, Valtra and Massey Ferguson.
Allis-Chalmers has left a legacy of tractors, including models such as 10-18, U, B, WC, WD, WD-45, D Series, 7000 Series, 8000 Series, 6000 Series and 5000 Series. Despite the challenges of the 1980s, Allis-Chalmers is recognized for its contribution to the American agricultural machinery industry, with many enthusiasts still valuing its tractors today.
