Asus has decidedly chosen its day to announce the upcoming release of ROG Ally, a portable PC / console system that follows in the footsteps of the Valve Steam Deck : April 1st. And while everyone was thinking of a big fish, the firm has confirmed that the platform will see the light of day. And Dave2D even presents us with a prototype on his channel.
Asus launches its new portable gaming PC, the ROG Ally, which could well become a viable alternative to Valve's Steam Deck, which has seen huge success in recent months. In a YouTube video, tech hardware reviewer Dave Lee spent a week with the ROG Ally and was impressed with its performance.
According to Asus, the ROG Ally offers twice the performance of the Steam Deck, with a new custom four-nanometer Apu Zen 4 RDNA3 processor. Dave Lee confirms that he was impressed with the performance of the device after testing several games.
The ROG Ally's 7-inch screen is also a strong point, with a resolution of 1080p, which is a higher resolution than the Steam Deck, which is limited to 800p. The screen is also brighter and offers better colors. But the most impressive feature is the 120Hz refresh rate, which provides an even smoother gaming experience. However, to take advantage of the screen and the high performance of the ROG Ally, it is necessary to have powerful hardware.
The ROG Ally has an incredibly quiet ventilation system, the platform makes almost no noise. This allows you to play demanding games without being disturbed by the noise of the fans.
On the top of the ROG Ally, there is an external XG Mobile port, which allows you to connect an external graphics card and thus considerably increase the graphics performance of the device for use on a TV screen or monitor. This external port is a first on a gaming laptop, and it's compatible with Nvidia and AMD graphics cards.
Dave Lee also seems impressed with the ROG Ally's design and build quality. The device is made from high quality materials and the touch screen offers good responsiveness. Its compact size makes it easy to carry.
Although the ROG Ally is more expensive than the Steam deck, it offers superior performance and build quality. Asus has clearly taken consumer feedback into account and designed a product that offers a viable alternative to the Steam Deck.
