Farming Simulator 19 test: gameplay and maps, changes welcome

Without revolutionizing the genre, Farming Simulator 19 still brings some minor changes in the gameplay, starting with its new management of the farm.

If you have never played Farming Simulator before, then in FS 19 you will experience much more intuitive gameplay than the previous ones. It was a wish of Giants Software: to open the game to newcomers. Successful bet ?

Starting point of a game, your farmer. This is one of the novelties of FS 19, you must now, like a competing title made in Poland, customize your farmer. Here, no work coats or rubber boots: your modern day farmer has class. 3 game modes

Once your farmer is well defined, it's time for the game mode. Giants always thinks of the young players of his title Pegi 3, with a "New farmer" mode which is none other than the default game mode of Farming Simulator 17. You start with equipment, a farm, silos, and buildings already integrated into the map you are going to play on. In short, since this mode has proven itself, it would have been a shame to exclude it. But this version 19 also offers, for the most experienced, 2 new game modes: "Farm manager" and "Starting from zero".

In the first, you have a large financial capital and you have to buy your land, your equipment, and set up your farms. In the second, you go with… NOTHING, and you have to complete missions as a worker to prosper. This is the most difficult mode in the game, and we were expecting it!

Half-created maps

For the old players that we are - if you are on univers-simu.com, there is a good chance that you are also part of it - it is the mode "Manager of the farm" which makes us the eye. In this mode, you will discover, from the start, one of the new features of Farming Simulator 19: placeable buildings.

At the time of writing, only 2 cards are playable: Ravenport, an American card, and Fellsbrunn, a German card. Estancia Lapacho, from the FS 17 Platinum DLC, should return in a revamped version via the game's modhub. Both radically contrast with the backgrounds of the previous episode. Hilly, colorful, full of details (garbage cans, buildings under construction, etc.), the 2 maps are absolutely magnificent (with a preference for the USA map). Whether you choose one or the other, you will need to decorate it and place your stables, meadows, and other storage silos. How? 'Or' What ? Quite simply through the “boutique” menu. The Giants Engine does the rest. Just say where you want to place your building, the game automatically adapts the relief of the map.

If the idea is excellent, in practice we very often find ourselves unable to place the building or the silo where we want it because the game engine does not manage to level the ground correctly, the slopes being too important.

You might be saying to yourself: "But, do we have to put these elements in our plots?" ". Lost ! Unlike Farming Simulator 17, you no longer buy a plot, but land. Most of the time, the latter includes a plot and its environment (trees, grass, etc.). Certain sites, sold at a lower price, do not have a field. Nothing prevents you from placing your farm there, or exploiting it for wood.

Missions

Farming Simulator 17 had already taken a big step forward to allow new players to learn how to play by completing missions. It was enough to come to a plot and be offered a job. Today FS 19 goes further by offering, directly in the game interface, a mission menu. Transport, spreading, harvesting,… this menu is automatically enhanced as you play. Ideal to break a little routine and to make pocket money. To get the job done, you must either use your equipment or rent it. You will be able to do your own ETA in single player mode! Very well received from Giants Software!

Solo, trust the workers

They are always present and ready to get their hands dirty, the workers in Farming Simulator 19 work like their “ancestors” in version 17. All you have to do is bring the equipment to the edge of the field to be able to activate an employee on a task. precise. Simple and efficient. And the problem is there. Many players expected a significant development, it is not. Worse, the workers are most of the time unable to manage the reliefs of the edge of the plot, falling into the void with the material. Farming Simulator 19 includes large equipment, with tools with a large working width, and artificial intelligence is not at all adapted to their use.

Silage is still not possible by sending 2 workers: one in the forage harvester, the other as a follower with a trailer. Moreover, even as a simple follower, with you at the controls of the forage harvester, it does not work. This becomes problematic for a game that is in its 10th year, and when you see the progress of a competing game like Cattle and Crops, still in the development stage, which allows workers to be sent to the other end of a map to perform a task.

In short, AI is the bête noire of this new version. How many players only play solo? Impossible to say, but it will be as many virtual farmers disappointed by this component.

Multiplayer to the rescue!

Better than a "beast" computer, humans are better able to drive the machines of the game. The multiplayer evolves for our greatest pleasure, because this game mode has been, since version 11, the strength of this reference simulation . THE big novelty is this possibility of creating several farms within the same game, separating the goods and finances of each player. It was a strong demand from the existing community. Giants Software listened to the good people. One downside: when you resume a multiplayer game in solo, the farms are permanently merged. Thus, an online part must remain online, and the rental of a dedicated server becomes particularly recommended.
