NAS manufacturer Synology has announced that its 2023 NAS will be partially based on a new AMD platform, which was inaugurated with the DS1522+. Our colleagues from Nextinpact.com had the opportunity to test it. You can read the full report here.
To remember about this Synology DS1522+
Despite the choice of an AMD Ryzen R1600 processor, which has no hardware acceleration of video (de) compression, the manufacturer made an interesting choice by integrating 1x 8 GB of DDR4 by default. The network part remains composed of 1 Gb/s ports, but there is the possibility of activating aggregation. DS1522+ is equipped with 4 x 1Gb/s Ethernet ports, with Multi Path SMB coming in DSM version 7.2, making it effortless to take advantage of all ports. The choice of chassis is economical, with a model with 5 plastic bays and an external power supply, already seen on other models. It has the particularity of being narrow, which prevents having a slot for a PCIe port. Synology has therefore opted for an unusual solution: to offer a slot at the back for a miniature network card, in PCIe 3.0 x2. However, the manufacturer is the only one to have a compatible card, which is rather expensive for a 10 Gb/s model: the E10G22-T1-Mini at 180 euros.
